Designing for Pakistan's Climate: Passive Cooling in Modern Architecture

Pakistan's summers routinely push past 40 degrees Celsius across much of Punjab and Sindh, and mechanical air conditioning alone is an expensive, energy-intensive way to manage that heat at scale. At ACCO, passive cooling strategies are a starting point in every design brief, not an afterthought.

The simplest lever is orientation: positioning a building's long facade away from direct east-west sun exposure can meaningfully reduce solar heat gain before any mechanical system is switched on. Deep roof overhangs and vertical shading fins block direct sun from hitting glazing during peak hours while still allowing daylight in.

Cross-ventilation is the second major lever. Floor plans designed with openings on opposing facades allow prevailing breezes to move through a building naturally, reducing dependence on air conditioning during shoulder seasons.

On our Willowgate Residences project, we combined all three strategies — orientation, shading, and cross-ventilation — and owners have reported noticeably lower cooling costs compared to conventional homes in the same area. Passive design doesn't replace mechanical cooling entirely, but it meaningfully reduces the load those systems need to carry, which matters both for energy bills and for Pakistan's strained power grid.
